Meet Layla Sami Daoud, a junior film and TV major at SCAD aiming to make a difference through her art. She is offering to take portraits for a minimum of $10 all this quarter, the proceeds benefiting the great people of Palestine. DM her on Instagram to participate, @timeisnonlinear.

Emma Sikes : Where did the username @timeisnonlinear come from?

“I got super into quantum mechanics…and also events can unfold in unpredictable ways, making it difficult to pinpoint an absolute past, present, or future meaning tomorrow isn’t promised so essentially; YOLO. I also read that because of gravity technically our feet are younger than our heads, and I think that’s so interesting. I also think when you’re looking into the past when you look at the stars. So all of those reasons smushed together.”

Emma Sikes: Why are you offering $10 portraits?

"I’m Jordanian and Palestinian so I feel deeply that there needs to be an immediate and lasting ceasefire in Gaza. I am offering portraits to people who send me a receipt proving they donated a minimum of $10 to The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA). I hope through offering these portraits I can raise funds in my community to aid Palestinian people during this unprecedented tragedy."

ES: How long are you doing this?

"I’ll be offering this all quarter long, DM me on Instagram to book a time on the weekends!"

ES: Do you like to make statements with your art?

"Yes, I’ve done political pieces before, I like to say I make things that are honest and abstract, the pieces are saying something, always."

ES: Do you have a favorite Palestinian artist that you think everyone should listen to/follow?

"Yes! For music I'd recommend Saint Levant, especially his newest song, the music video for it features Palestine, beautifully. For photography I’d say Rania Matar."
