My Lovestory with MattyBRaps

By: Emily Rollins

Yes, I used to dance with MattyBRaps. After a decade, I feel I can finally break my silence on this. Looking back on my experience with a mature perspective, I now realize: I was that bitch. I mean, professionally working at the age of nine is something most people can’t say. All of us involved, Matt included (yes, I call him that #weretight), were young kids and we had no concept of the magnitude of the opportunity we had. I got to meet the Duck Dynasty family and Zendaya by working with him, which I humbly brag about now. My little Harry Styles-fan-heart freaks out when I think back on the fact that we, as a group, almost (key word) signed with Simon Cowell while One Direction was still alive. #harrycouldvefallenfortweleveyearoldme

It was almost every weekend that my sister, who also danced for him, and I were missing school on Friday’s to drive or fly somewhere to perform in the concert the next night. Sure, we got bullied for dancing in a small town where the only acceptable extracurriculars were football and cheerleading, but we were getting shmoney. Since all of us working together were between the ages of 9-15, we obviously hardly got work done. Music videos took days to shoot, and we would often play ultimate frisbee in the lobby of the venues instead of mic check.

Ultimately, we had to go our separate ways as we were growing up. They decided they wanted to go in a different direction as far as performers, so our “posse” disbanded. I’ve still had contact with Elijah, DeeDee, (the other two backup dancers) and Matt over the years. It’s especially fun to see the different paths everyone has ended up on now. However, even after all these years, the choreography is still engrained in my #bones (muscle memory is real). And to end with a cringe fact, I can’t listen to “Ice Ice Baby” without doing our choreography.
